Tips

Potential Hazards

We had mediocre conditions so can say from experience you can get waves/surge and currents. So despite this being a simple snorkel in theory, beginners will need the right day.

How Busy / Crowds

Along with the Omeo Wreck, this is one the go to snorkel spots in Perth. What surprised us, is Mettams Pool is a relatively small area and despite it appearing quiet, we still bumped into other snorkellers.

The big tip here is snorkel early – not only will you likely get the best of the conditions, but the best of the crowds and parking too.

Parking

Parking is tricky – especially on a fine weekend or during holidays. Parking is available along West Coast Drive and there is a car park about 250m from Mettams – which is where we got one of the last spots park at about 7.30am. By the time we left an hour later, there was a queue to get in to the car park. So, an early snorkel is the way to go.

The information for each snorkel spot is provided by people who have snorkelled there. However, snorkelling conditions change daily. Please be aware that wind, swell, tides and cloud cover can all affect visibility and your experience in the water.

Tours

Mettams Pool is an easy snorkel from the beach, but it you would prefer a snorkel tour here are some of the best snorkel tours around Perth.

Best Conditions

Generally, the earlier in the day you snorkel around Perth, the better conditions will be. Often, by around lunchtime, westerly winds pick up which can create waves and reduce visibility. If the prevailing wind for the day has an easterly aspect to it, you usually get better conditions. Several days in a row of easterly or light winds can make for excellent snorkelling.

If you can also snorkel at the change of tide or on a smaller tide, you are less likely to experience currents. At low tide the reef can provide some protection – but can also be quite shallow.

About the Snorkel

When we were researching our snorkelling trip to Perth, one site kept coming up – Mettams Pool. This beautiful near-shore reef is part of a stunning beach and is a favourite amongst the Perth snorkelling Facebook group. So, it was a no brainer that we had to go to Mettams to see what we could see.

There were a few things we already knew about Mettams. It can be busy and you need to get conditions just right. Well, it certainly was busy – even at 7.30am on a hot day, and conditions as we pulled up were average to say the least.

The incoming tide was breaking over the reef and it looked a bit wavy. Despite being chuffed with getting a park, we almost didn’t bother getting in. It was only after chatting to a returning snorkeller – yes they were finishing their snorkel around 7.30am – who said it was good enough to take the plunge.

And we were glad we did. No, conditions were not great. It was lumpy, surgey and visibility was only fair – but we were super excited to be snorkelling at this spot we had read so much about. We were in the water at Mettams Pool!

Despite the conditions (which stopped us getting to the outside of the reef) there were fish everywhere. We spotted herrings, bream, morwongs, wrasse, stripeys and sweep to name just a few. One of the highlights were big schools of gold lined bream.

It was disappointing not to get further out and look for Port Jackson sharks and the water was moving a lot which made it hard to get down to explore under ledges. Even so, there were plenty of fish and it was not hard to see why this is such a popular spot.

In calm conditions, Mettams Pool is a great spot for beginners. There is easy access from the beach, it is shallow and there is plenty to see. No wonder it is one of Perth’s best known snorkel spots.
