Muiron Islands Snorkel

If you think you have seen all that Ningaloo has to offer, get yourself to the Muiron Islands 25km north of Exmouth. The coral around the islands is stunning with lots of beautiful soft coral you don’t see in the main Ningaloo Lagoon or outer reef. And the marine life is amazing too. Get on a tour and look out for manta rays, turtles, sharks, dugongs, dolphins and plenty of fish.

Tours to the Muiron Islands depart from Exmouth. Depending on the conditions, it is a 75 -90 minute cruise to the islands which are 25km north of the Exmouth Peninsula. We departed from the Bundegi Boat Ramp.

Snorkel Entry

Where & How do you get in?

Along the island we anchored but in the channel it was a drift snorkel with the boat picking us up at the end. Water entry and exit is from a boat with ladder/platform.

About the Snorkel

Whale shark tours are all the go when you are in Exmouth, but if you want to really round off your Ningaloo snorkelling experience think about a trip to the Muiron Islands. The coral is magnificent, the soft corals in particular are stunning. And the marine life is incredible, more on that in moment.

The Muiron Islands are about 25km off the tip of the Exmouth Peninsula. There are dive and snorkel tours that go out there. We were in the fortunate position to have our daughter living in Exmouth. She didn’t risk her small boat for this trip, so we pitched in and hired a bigger boat for the ride out there.

Where you snorkel around the Muirons will depend on the conditions. With westerlies blowing for our trip, we stuck to the eastern side of the south and north island. We also saw the tour boats there.

The marine life here was fantastic. We saw manta rays, dugongs, a pod of dolphins and an olive sea snake. There were green sea turtles and a huge loggerhead turtle. We also spotted plenty of white tipped, black tipped and grey reef sharks. There were heaps of fish too. From huge estuary cod and striking golden trevally to colourful damsel fish and clown fish, it was fish spotting heaven.

We snorkelled off the east coast of both the north and south island which were amazing. The best soft corals were off the south island. We also did a drift snorkel on the northeast side of the channel between the islands where the reef drops off. We saw lots of sharks here, manta rays and a huge loggerhead turtle.

Whether you have the experience to hire a boat or go out on tour, getting to the Muiron Islands is an incredible experience. It is quite a different environment to the Ningaloo Lagoon and outer reef and the marine life won’t disappoint.
