Woodman Point Snorkel
Located in the Woodman Point Recreation Reserve in Coogee south of Perth, the rock wall here is a fun snorkel. Not only is there a huge variety of fish living along the wall, but you can also explore the sand and weed patches. If you have a keen eye, you might also spot some sea horses amongst the rock.
Potential Hazards
This is a popular fishing spot so look out for lines.
How Busy / Crowds
Generally not as busy here as say a Mettams or Omeo Wreck, but it is a popular spot. Even so, there is plenty of room to spread out.
Parking
There are 2 car parks. There is a small one at the main beach. If that is full, keep going and there is a bigger car park area closer to the rock wall.
The information for each snorkel spot is provided by people who have snorkelled there. However, snorkelling conditions change daily. Please be aware that wind, swell, tides and cloud cover can all affect visibility and your experience in the water.

Tours
Woodman Point is an easy snorkel from the beach, but it you would prefer a snorkel tour here are some of the best snorkel tours around Perth.
Best Conditions
Generally, the earlier in the day you snorkel around Perth, the better conditions will be. Often, by around lunchtime, westerly winds pick up which can create waves and reduce visibility. If the prevailing wind for the day has an easterly aspect to it, you usually get better conditions. Several days in a row of easterly or light winds can make for excellent snorkelling.
If you can also snorkel at the change of tide or on a smaller tide, you are less likely to experience currents.

About the Snorkel
After a week snorkelling along the greater Perth coastline, this was our final swim – and it was one of the best. There was just a small amount of chop when we arrived but once we were in the water, we didn’t notice it.
After getting in the water at the beach we had planned to snorkel the length of the rock wall, go around the tip and snorkel back in along the other side. But there was so much to see on our way out we didn’t get that far. Keep an eye out for people fishing if you do go right the way around.
Visibility near the beach where we entered wasn’t great, but it improved as we got closer to the rocks, so we stayed nearer to the rock wall rather than explore the adjacent sea grass beds. We did see a huge flathead dart across into the weeds.
Besides the usual schools of toadfish and striped grunter, we also spotted whiting, damsel fish, monocle bream, goat fish, old wives, red lipped morwongs, stripeys, crested morwongs, pomfreds and cardinal fish. There was so much to see!
Getting down and peering into the little caves and swim throughs, we spotted schools of stripeys and old wives which was a great sight.
The only thing we didn’t spot that was on our list was a seahorse. Apparently, you can find them at Woodman Point. From our seahorse spotting at Rye Pier in Victoria, we know they are the kind of thing where if you see one you will see lots – you just need to get your eye in, but we will have to try again another time at Woodman Point.
If you want to get away from the crowds you might find at Mettams or Omeo, Woodman Point is a great option. There is plenty to see and easy access from the beach. Woodies Café is a great spot to grab a cool drink after your snorkel.
