Sharks are often front of mind when we take to the water but a study by Surf Life Saving Australia that appeared in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health shows that our own lack of health is a much bigger danger.
Of non-drowning deaths in coastal waters, just over 50% were due to a cardiac event.
This really underlines that if you are snorkelling, being realistic about your health and fitness is an important consideration.
Currents, swells and tides can all make swimming in the ocean more difficult than cooling off in a backyard pool
So, if you want to swim with a whale shark, Australia is the place to do it!
