Mass Coral Reef Bleaching Event

Sad news for the Great Barrier Reef with reports from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that a fifth mass bleaching event in 8 years is underway.

The current coral bleaching event is occurring on a global scale driven by record high temperatures.

The extent of the bleaching in the southern hemisphere goes beyond the Great Barrier Reef, with Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island also being affected.

Bleaching events not only have a significant impact on coral ecosystems, but also on eco-tourism and fisheries
